Monday, November 17th, 2008Hot Water System FAQ:
We have forced hot water central heating. In one of the bedrooms (top floor) we have a double-height radiator that barely heats up. I have tried bleeding it on numerous occasions and only ever get air, never water, no matter how long I bleed it for. I thought it might have a blockage, but when I crank the heating up as high as it will go the whole radiator heats up. So then I thought it must be a pressure issue. I couldn’t work out how to add water to the system so when our furnace was being serviced I asked the tech if he could show me. He told me we have a system that you never need to add water to, it does it by itself (?). So I asked him about our radiator issue…he took a look, told us the radiator needed to be replaced (he later sent a quote that we definitely can’t afford) and also said the “vents” on every radiator in the house need to be replaced. Anyone have any bright ideas on what the issue could be? Does his suggestion of replacing vents make any sense? Is replacing a vent something a layman such as myself could do? Thanks a lot.
